The example of the Five paragraph essay
A. Definition
The five paragraph essay format is a guide that helps writers structure an essay. It consists of 1 introductory paragraph, 3 body paragraphs and 1 concluding paragraph. We can recognize a F.P.E. by the type of the theme: it can be a narrative essay, definition essay, description essay, compare/contrast essay, cause/effect essay, argumentative essay…etc.
B. The structure:
Below is the structure of a five paragraph essay
I. INTRODUCTION
1. Hook → our century is marked by the boom of the means of communication
2. Background information → cell-phones have drastically changed the way we communicate
3. Thesis → thus, it has many negative impacts on society.
II. BODY ESSAY
1. Idea 01 → The N.I.C at school
1. a. Supporting details → cheating
1. b. Examples → (students use it during tests)
2. Idea 02 → The N.I.C on the road
2. a Supporting details → accidents
2. b. Examples → (talk on the phone while driving)
3. Idea 03 → The N.I.C in the marriage
3. a. Supporting details → divorces
3. b. Examples → (lack of communication)
III. CONCLUSION
1. Rephrase thesis → No matter what the drawbacks are, cell-phones are very useful
2. Call to action → Because of these dangers, people should be careful
Example: The negative impacts of cell-phones on society.
C. How to write the Introduction?
It should be very attractive (catchy). The hook can be a question, quote, satistic or anecdote. Add a background information to contextualize (do not explain). Finally, add a sentence that explains your main arguments.
D. The body essay:
it is divided into 3 main paragraphs corresponding to your 3 main ideas you’ll develop. In each paragraph, mention the idea, explain it and give an example.
E. Conclusion:
It’s a short summary that will wrap up your argument. Add a call to action (advice, warning, a question…etc
NB: don’t forget to use link words and transitional phrases to make it smooth.
